In recent years, ports have experienced a period of significant growth and development along with intense inter-port rivalry as a consequence of intermodality and hinterland development. Being traditional product transit points, they have gone through a process of growth and development in recent years evidenced by the extension and modernization of their infrastructure, the increased number of services available and improved quality. Look at the ports in Sabah. Seeing is believing!

While doing a research on Global warming pertaining to the Kyoto protocol at the end of last year in preparation for the Bali Conference , it shocked me to dawn on the serious negative impacts of coal power plant to Global warming which is one of the most serious challenges facing us today. Undoubtedly logisticians are the main culprits to this would be devastation. At time I blamed myself for being ignorance of this highly “sensitive” issue that happens right at our very own backyard, i.e.: the proposed 300-megawatt coal power plant in Silam, Lahad Datu.

Strategy logistics planning is one of the subjects favor by my students at the Open University Malaysia (OUM). They love it because it opens avenues for them to think critically. Critical thinking, which is lacking among the University students locally now a day is the ability to be in control of one’s thinking. It includes the ability to consciously examine the elements of one’s reasoning, or that of another, and evaluate that reasoning against universal intellectual standards - clarity, accuracy, precision, relevance, depth, breadth, and logic. It also involves the structured examination of sources of information.

A few weeks ago I referred two of the three-pronged strategies initiated by the “Sabah Development Corridor” (SDC) to overcoming the high cost syndrome in the land below the wind. Let me share my thinking:
1. Enhancing the cost competitiveness of ports in Sabah via alliances with other global port operators and shipping liners.
Transportation via seaport plays a key role in the world economy largely due to the numerous technical and economic advantages it possesses over other modes of transportation. Needless to mention the globalization of the world economy has led to an increasingly important role for transportation.

Lately there was so much talk about third-party logistics, abbreviated as 3PL. But what actually is 3PL? If 3PL exists then who is the First Party logistics and similarly what about the function of the Second Party?
Logistically speaking the 1st party logistics is the products supplier and 2nd party is the company buying the product that was being stored by the 3rd party logistics provider.
